When applying for an MMSI the applicant will be asked for vessel specific and owner contact infor- mation. It is important this information is provided as it greatly assists rescue resources during emergencies. If the unit does not contain an integral GPS interface, vessel operators need to connect their radio to a GPS receiver using a two-wire NMEA 0183 interface found on all DSC- equipped marine radios and on most GPS receivers. Instructions should be provided in the radio and GPS opera- tor’s manual. Coast Guard Enforcement The Coast Guard is clear in their guidance, Policy Letter 15-06, that the new radio requirements and waiver provisions apply to inspected passenger vessels operating within 20 miles of coast; therefore, vessels with COIs endorsed with Coastwise and Limited Coastwise routes are subject to the requirements. Vessels operating inland on Great Lakes, rivers, lakes, bays, and sounds are exempt.
