As for whether lithium/polymer batteries will eventually replace lead acid batteries, I cannot predict the future, but I can offer an alternative technology that may have widespread use in marine operations: Absorbed glass mat, or AGM, batteries. What is interest- ing is that AGM batteries contain only enough liquid to keep the mat wet with the electrolyte, so that if the battery is broken, no liquid will leak out. That said, all of this is true of normal battery uses on boats today, i.e. starting batteries and powering navigation elec- tronics. If we are discussing hybrid or fully battery-powered vessels, then lithium batteries will be the choice, because of weight and size savings, and their safety concerns will be addressed in ad- ditional systems such as, fire suppres- sion, structural fire insulation, fire and smoke detection, etc. When considering making changes to your vessel’s batteries, you should check with your local Coast Guard Officer in Charge of Marine Inspections or OCMI. n Maintenance Management Program Cloud Based - Access from any Device with any browser Maintenance - Inventory - Documentation Intuitive User Interface Flagship Integration Turnkey Setup w w w .
