8 JUNE 2017 • FOGHORN FOGHORNFOCUS: OPERATIONS Guidance and Verification To assist AIS users, the Coast Guard has promulgated a two-page USCG AIS Encoding Guide which is available for download on the Coast Guard Navigation Center (NAVCEN) website at https://www.navcen.uscg.gov. NAVCEN also now provides the Vessel Information Verification Service (VIVS), a web-based self-help tool that allows users to search AIS vessel data. VIVS search results will highlight any suspectedAIS Static Data discrepancies. We further encourage you to visit the NAVCEN website not only to obtain further detailed information on AIS and how it works, but also to review a plethora of other navigation information. AIS is a valuable navigation safety radio communication tool. However, its effectiveness is undermined by the broadcast of inaccurate, improper or outdated data. Help us to help you, always ensure your AIS is in peak operating condition and broadcasting accurate and up-to-date data. n Learn More Coast Guard Navigation Center Website: https://www.navcen.uscg.gov USCG AIS Encoding Guide: http://www.navcen.uscg.gov/pdf/AIS/AISGuide.pdf VIVS: https://www.navcen.uscg.gov/vivs About the Author Ensign Turay is stationed at the U.S. Coast Guard Navigation Center in Alexandria, VA.
