THE VIRTUAL TICKETER specially treated. As these areas are often not easily accessible once a vessel is in use, we take extra care and use a special two-part epoxy primer, and then a durable enamel surface coat. This process creates a long-lasting waterproof coating that totally seals the aluminum surface, insulating it from any water which may become trapped against it. • On painted vessels, whenever a hole is drilled into a painted surface, we coat the hole, allowing it to dry before installing any fasteners or hardware. We do this because whenever a painted surface has been cut, an opportunity has been created for water to potentially seep beneath the paint and cause corrosion. • Depending on vessel applica- tion, we sometimes coat exterior aluminum in Sharkhide sealant to help provide an additional line of defense against surface corrosion. There are other steps we take that are more specific to the manufacturing process, but the items above outline an approach that can be taken for operators looking to thwart corrosion wherever it may occur. Generally speaking, preventa- tive maintenance items for operators include: • Washing the salt water off your vessel as often as practically possible. • Preventing water from getting trapped between any two surfaces and staying there. • Periodically inspecting anodes, replacing as needed, and verifying that they are working properly. • Making sure you have no stray current to your hull. • Isolating aluminum from dissimi- lar metal contact, using TEF-Gel on every fastener of your vessel. n About the Authors Andrew “Andy” Lebet, P.E., is the President of PVA member DeJong & Lebet, Inc., a full service naval architectural firm, specializing in the design and conversion of all types of vessel, primarily under 400 feet.
