PASSENGER VESSEL DESIGNS: OPTIMIZED FOR PROFITABILITY Has your crew conducted lifesaving actions in 2017? Has your operation im- plemented crucial safety practices that make the passenger vessel industry safer? If so, now is the time to be rec- ognized. The deadline to submit nomi- nations for the PVA/Passenger Vessel Foundation-sponsored safety awards is November 30, but it is never too early to submit a nomination. Each year, PVA presents two pres- tigious safety awards, which were created by the PVA Safety and Security Committee and sponsored by the Passenger Vessel Foundation, to well- deserving recipients who have demon- strated extraordinary actions that result in a safer marine environment. The PVA Safety and Security Committee encourages vessel operators to nominate qualified personnel for one of these two safety awards. Captain Elizabeth Gedney Passenger Vessel Safety Award This award is named in honor of Captain Elizabeth “Beth” Gedney, who was PVA’s Director of Safety, Security and Risk Management for many years. It is presented annually to recognize actions by PVA Vessel members and their employees through safety training, seamanship, and dedication to the best standards of the passenger vessel industry that have resulted in a signifi- cant, positive outcome. More simply, actions taken in response to a crisis or emergency, resulting in a substantial, and possibly life- saving, impact (i.e. man-overboard, distressed vessel/person rescue, etc.).
