Midwest Flood Waters Impact PVA Members Several PVA Vessel members operating in the Midwest have been severely hampered by spring flooding on many major inland waterways, including the Mississippi, Missouri, and Arkansas Rivers. “The potential for widespread flooding remains high this spring,” the National Weather Service reported. Indeed, flood warnings or advisories were issued by NWS along nearly the entire length of the Mississippi River in late May into early June. In total, eight states along the Mississippi River have seen the longest period of flooding since the Great Flood of 1927, according to NWS and reported in Waterways Journal. As of this writing, some of the affected vessel operators have not been able to open yet this season, while others have had a late start. Captain Steve Terry, President of Riverboat Excursions in Hannibal, MO, has had to tie up his vessel, the Mark Twain, until water levels recede to safer levels, with an expected opening date in mid-June. “This is has been a challenging year for us so far,” Terry said. “And, I know other PVA members are also affected.” n
