30 JUNE 2019 • FOGHORN SAFETYMATTERS employed by that employer as a HAZMAT employee and for 90 days thereafter. PVA is Here to Help In working with the Coast Guard to manage compliance en- forcement, PVA staff were told that there is free online training available to ferry vessel operators that would satisfy the training re- quirements in 49 CFR. The training can be found on the PHMSA website: www.phmsa.dot.gov/ training/hazmat/training-mod- ules. Individuals will have to register for the training modules, but again the training is free. The only concerns raised by PVA members over the online training has been the applicability to vessel operations. There are provisions for more specific training and the Coast Guard encouraged PVA to develop and submit for approval more vessel-specific training that could be used by PVA members to satisfy training requirements. In response to that concern and the Coast Guard offer, the PVA Safety and Security Committee took up the task of finding relevant training information for use by all members. Fortunately, Capt. Greg Gifford, formerly of the Steamship Authority, had developed an extensive PowerPoint presentation for the Steamship Authority that has been successfully used to meet the HAZMAT training require- ments. Using Capt. Gifford’s training, a small group of ferry operators within the PVA Safety and Security Committee were able to create a generic presentation containing the required information. This material is available to PVA members now and will be submitted to the Coast Guard in the near future for approval. Once approved, the training will be available on the PVA website as well as in- corporated into the online Learning Management system supported by PVA associate member Marine Learning Systems. n Screenshot of the PHMSA home page.
