Freeport Shipbuilding was an early Associate Members of PVA, joining back in the early 1980s, and was one of 10 exhibitors at the PVA Convention Trade Show in 1985, where each exhibitor had an eight-foot table in the lobby of a Holiday Inn in Riviera Beach, FL. Sumter Yacht StarShip Launches New Water Taxi Service in Tampa Ahoy, mateys! Troy Manthey, President/CEO of Yacht StarShip, Tampa, FL, has expanded his operation with the launching of Pirate Water Taxi. The new service provides water taxi service in the Tampa waterfront area and private charters for groups up to 126 persons, using the entire fleet of three water taxis. The bright yellow 45-foot water taxis carry 34 to 46 passengers. Due to its success, a fourth water taxi will begin service this fall. Yacht Starship worked with PVA Associate Member Pinnacle Marine to acquire the water taxi fleet. With Tampa’s tourism increasing and known for its Gasparilla pirate water festival, which according to Wikipedia celebrates the “apocry- phal legend José Gaspar, a mythical Spanish pirate captain who suppos- edly operated in Southwest Florida,” Tampa is the ideal place for a pirate- themed vessel operation. Captains on Pirate Water Taxi dress in pirate attire and offer narrated tours about the city’s history and attractions. “We always knew Tampa would support a water taxi service as the waterfront evolved,” Manthey told the Tampa Bay Times. n Tours, Watermark Cruises, and several others. S o m e o f J i m ’ s n o t e w o r t h y passenger vessels include Starship, (Tampa), Atlantica, Grand Romance, Lady Anderson, Spirit of Carolina, Solaris, and California Princess. Jim’s entire work life involved a ship or boat of some type, whether it be that he was working on them, designing them, building them or owning them, he had a true passion for ships. He started working on boats as a kid as a means of helping support his family through commer- cial seafood harvesting. He worked in the shipbuilding industry starting as a ship fitter and worked his way up. He worked in the yard as well as the office while mastering the trade and craft of boat design and building. He opened his own shipyard in Valparaiso, FL, in 1977 and shortly thereafter relocated the operation to Freeport. He built many beautiful vessels but not without the support, hard work, and loyalty of his shipyard team. Jim will be missed by all. n C M Y CM MY CY CMY K SCA0102A Ad - Foghorn Jul2016.pdf 1 6/7/2016 4:32:54 PM
