The drills help sharpen equipment capability and planning, and prepare crews to effectively respond to a major disaster or threat. Given the high-speed capa- bility of the County’s water taxis, they will be able to play a vital regional role in evacuating personnel and deliver- ing supplies though our waterways if the region is faced with a disaster in the future. When asked for advice to other vessel operators, Panzero replied, “Doing these types of large-scale drills are essential to under- standing your equipment and how it works. While reading, talking, and watching videos about e v a c u a t i n g a v e s s e l are helpful, they don’t compare to the real deal. This really gives a person a greater understanding and sense of awareness of what to expect and how to react should the real life situation occur. Our hope is that we will never have to abandon the vessel but if we do, we believe that this exercise has given us more confi- dence to do what’s necessary to save lives. So, when planning any drill, my advice is to make it as realistic as possible for maximum benefit.” n
