Corvus Energy has received DNV Cyber Security Type Approval for its Dolphin NxtGen Battery Energy Storage System (BESS). See link. The approval also covers the Gen 4 BMS Pack Controller, extending cybersecurity compliance across the entire NxtGen product family.
The certification confirms that Corvus systems meet the stringent cybersecurity requirements in DNV’s rules for classification. It validates that Corvus ESS solutions are engineered to protect critical onboard energy infrastructure against evolving cyber threats throughout their lifecycle.
The Dolphin NxtGen BESS is designed for applications that require a high-energy battery system where lightweight is essential, such as ferries, tourist vessels, canal boats, and sightseeing vessels. Its space-efficient, rack free design enables flexible installation configurations to maximize utilization of available battery room space.
The DNV approval follows an extensive independent assessment of more than 50 cybersecurity capabilities, including secure system architecture, access control, data integrity, and safe remote software and firmware updates. The certification also covers data collection and monitoring through the Corvus Lighthouse platform, which supports real‑time diagnostics and advanced analytics.
As vessels become more connected, the risk of unauthorized access or operational disruption grows. Energy storage systems, central to vessel safety and propulsion, are particularly sensitive.
Corvus ESS solutions are designed to prevent external parties from exploiting the ESS as a pathway into the vessel’s wider network. With encrypted communication, secure remote service, and strict access management, Corvus helps shipowners safeguard operational continuity and maintain system integrity.
This new approval adds to the existing Cyber Security Type Approval already granted for the Corvus Orca ESS by DNV and other major class societies, including ABS, Bureau Veritas (BV), and RINA—demonstrating a consistent, class‑recognized cybersecurity approach across the Corvus portfolio. Corvus is now pursuing cybersecurity approvals for its full product range.
