Washington State Ferries (WSF) has awarded fellow PVA member Siemens Energy the systems integrator contract for their fleet’s long-term electrification and decarbonization strategy.
Under the contract, Siemens Energy will provide engineering, systems integration, and electrical infrastructure expertise to support medium voltage shore power at WSF terminals. The scope includes system design, equipment supply and integration, and coordination to ensure safe, reliable, and future ready charging capability aligned with WSF’s evolving fleet plans.
The critical infrastructure will enable reliable, high power shore side charging that will support the hybrid electric ferries currently under construction and future battery electric ferry operations. WSF is the nation’s largest ferry system, carrying nearly 25 million passengers annually on 10 routes in the state. The ferries are the largest single consumer of diesel fuel within Washington state, making the operation’s electrification program an important step toward reducing the reliance on fossil fuels and towards benefits such as improved air quality in the Puget Sound region.
WSF’s program is setting a benchmark for maritime electrification in the U.S. It will build the infrastructure to support a more resilient and future-ready system to offer reliable service for the communities they connect.
