BTS Announces SafeMTS Near-Miss Reporting Webinar

The Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) will be hosting a 45‑minute webinar on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, (11:00–11:45 a.m. EST) to mark the release of the SafeMTS Report: Applying Large Language Models to Maritime Near-Miss Safety Data Analysis, detailing the application of advanced language model techniques to analyze near-miss safety data in the commercial maritime industry. BTS and the Maritime Administration have presented the SafeMTS pilot program to PVA members at MariTrends and in Foghorn.

The session will highlight pilot program objectives, methods, key findings, and next steps for broader implementation of SafeMTS. Learn how advanced language‑based tools were tested in a secure, protected environment to streamline near‑miss data processing, improve consistency, and deliver actionable safety insights.

BTS is encouraging individuals to read the report, which reviews how emerging data science methods can efficiently process and classify free-text near-miss reports within a secure, CIPSEA*-protected environment, improving analysis speed, consistency, and the ability to identify safety trends and risks. It also highlights the benefits, limitations, and next steps toward integrating these approaches into the broader SafeMTS program.
