38 JULY 2019 • FOGHORN MEMBERNEWS Despite their designation by the U.S. Coast Guard, passenger vessels carry more than just passengers. Many Washington State Ferries Carry Passengers…and Much More PVA vessel operators move other things, such as automobiles, trucks, mail, medical supplies, equipment, furnishings, and more. This is necessary as many PVAvessel members provide necessary service to islands where roads and bridges are not viable options. Earlier this year, Washington State Ferries, Seattle, WA, the nation’s largest ferry service, transported something out of the ordinary. The ferry operator carried a house. According to WSF’s Greg Faust, Director of Operations, one of their ferries carried a modular home from Southworth, on Puget Sound in Kitsap County, WA, to Vashon Island. But, it wasn’t the first time. Or the second time, either. “We perform this operation several times a year,” said Faust. The house was moved in pieces by several trucks to be pieced together at the home site on Vashon Island. The trucks were loaded on and off the vessel by the ferry’s crew who carefully monitored the situation. A home is moved in pieces on a Washington State Ferry.
