This season it numbered over 220 interns in several ports. I extolled the interns en-thusiasm and how the best joined post-college to start fresh new careers. Captain Dennis Luxem of Minnesota challenged me to remember the other end of the experience spectrum. He, like me, is eligible for social security and has no intention of retiring as todays seniors can be like the energizer bunny; we keep on going. Dennis got me thinking about role models in my life. I have a 93-year-old friend who is connected to countless people and whose friendship I have treasured for 45 years. Recently, when I wasnt keeping up with him, he threatened to trade me in and get a new friend 20 years younger. I remember in the early days of Odyssey Cruises in Chicago, we had Captain Jack Day on our team. Jack proudly wore his U.S. Navy Surface Warfare Officer pin that reflected his vast experience aboard destroyers and he wore the august rank of Captain, U.S. Navy.
