PROJECT SERVICES Annual Military Cruises Connect Crews with Special Families By Karen Rainbolt, FOGHORN Managing Editor T o most, the words “human resources” means the person or department in charge of hiring, firing, and company benefits. But, sometimes, when you simply look at those two words together, but separate- ly, they become something much more. Human. Resources. Terri Bernstein, VP of Operations at BB Riverboats in Newport, KY, dis- covered the hard way that as a vessel operator she can use her resource — a 1,000-passenger, three-deck, paddle- wheeler — in a very personal, human way. After her young husband, Army Staff Sgt. Nicholas R. Carnes, age 25, was killed in action in Afghanistan in 2007, Bernstein learned about the Army’s Survivor Outreach Services program. Survivor Outreach Services (SOS) is the official Army program designed to provide long-term support to surviving families of fallen soldiers. Conceived of and developed by survivors, this program is continually refined based on survivor feedback and involvement by senior Army leaders. “After my husband, Nick, was killed while serving, I went to a Survivor Outreach Services event for the families of fallen soldiers,” recalled Bernstein. “It was a very moving expe- rience for me, and I knew that I’d love to do something for other families.” There are many SOS events held around the nation for families; each event is carefully planned and executed by a regional SOS coordinator.
