Hundreds of U.S. communities, large and small, benefit from Brand USA’s work to enhance our national image abroad. The program’s marketing efforts bring in billions of dollars in visitor spending, which supports tens of thousands of local jobs. Brand USA has a series of “Ask a Local” videos that feature local people talking about an area in which they’re familiar and showcasing some of the area’s best assets to attract visitors. Going back to our Great Lakes example, there are high quality videos about Wisconsin, Illinois, Minnesota, and Michigan. According to Brand USA, this digital asset management system contains photography, video, and other resources for the promotion of travel to and within the USA. Resources are available to media, Brand USA partners, and agencies. And, of course, there are state and county tourism boards that are focused on getting tourists to come to the area and spend their discretionary income on lodging, food, souvenirs, and of course, attractions…such as your passenger vessel operation. State sites such as travelwisconsin. com, michigan.org, exploreminne- sota.com, and enjoyillinois.com are all excellent resources for a vessel operator in the Great Lakes. Ohio. org offers a pull-down menu for par- ticular regions within the state and events in those areas. And VisitPA.com has a “Destinations” tab that allows would-be visitors to learn about activi- ties and attractions. When you engage in destination marketing, you should engage closely with your community. To be effective, this means partnerships—perhaps even working with other passenger vessel operators in your area—are required in order to create a campaign that entices visitors to come to your area to expe- rience all the unique sights, sounds, and attractions that makes where you operate so special.
